First Free Saturdays: Haring and Friends
Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN
May 4, 2024
Though artists are often celebrated as individuals, many create art with communities of friends and collaborators. We explored how friendship supports creativity at this free family day celebrating the exhibition Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody.
With the help of the Walker Art Center’s education staff and volunteers, I hosted a collaborative mural-making activity that was engaged by nearly 500 Walker attendees. Window panes and tabletops were covered with paper sweeps where children and adults alike added drawings and words inspired by friendship and collaboration. By admiring or adding to what others have drawn, participants acted out the nurturing aspects of friendship, that of mutual support and growth.
